The cottage is part of a recent conversion of disused stable blocks behind the old Bear and Key Hotel, now the Prezzo restaurant and a number of flats. The horses housed here pulled the town’s first fire engine, which was purchased in 1867 and can be seen in the Whitstable Museum, a little way up the high street on the left. There are some pictures of the hotel in past times in a couple of the Whitstable history books on the shelves between the two bedrooms.
